The job
What is a virtual assistant?
A virtual assistant is a remote worker who handles a business’s email, calendar, records, calls and sales follow-up from home, usually for a client abroad.
The labor department’s career guide calls a VA “a self-employed worker who specializes in offering administrative services to clients from a remote location, usually a home office” (DOLE CareerInfo PH). The posts we read are broader than admin: 8 of 50 hired for sales and lead generation, and 17 (34%) included phone calls.
Email tops the list of tasks. If you would rather write than talk, the closest office job is chat and email support in a call center.

Two paths
Should you start in a call center or go straight to virtual assistant work?
Go straight to VA work if you already have admin, customer service or sales experience; start in a call center if you have none.
The reason is in the counts. Of 50 VA posts, 19 (38%) set no minimum experience. In a separate sample of 50 call center agent posts we read on JobStreet on 25 September 2026, 31 (62%) accepted applicants with none. Phone work also carries over: 17 VA posts included calls. Read what call center agent posts ask for before you choose.
- Call center first, VA laterEntry posts hire without experience more often (31 of 50), and 19 of 50 listed training. Phone calls with US customers are the experience that 17 VA posts ask you to use.
- Straight to VA work19 of 50 posts set no minimum, but you supply the computer, the internet and the home office yourself.

Requirements
What qualifications do you need to be a virtual assistant?
DOLE says a senior high school diploma can be enough; what the posts list most is equipment: your own internet connection, computer and headset.
The exact words are “a Sr. High School diploma would suffice” if you have intermediate to advanced technical skills (DOLE CareerInfo PH). In the posts, 29 of 50 (58%) named the internet connection, 10 asked you to bring your own computer and 6 a headset. Check what your answers would open:
How many of the 50 posts would accept you on paper?
Tell us three things. We count the posts whose written rules you meet.
With no experience, your application is the proof: a short recording, a clean resume and a sample of the work.
Counts from our reading of 50 posts, 23 October 2026. “Experience required, no length given” counts as met from any experience. Quiet workspace, webcam and VPN asks are not counted. A written rule is not a hiring decision: the recording, test and interview still decide.

No experience
Can you become a virtual assistant with no experience?
Yes: 19 of 50 posts set no minimum experience, though only 4 said outright that beginners are welcome.
11 posts (22%) called experience an advantage, and 8 (16%) did not ask for it or said entry level. The largest group, 24 (48%), wanted experience without saying how much, for example in insurance, dental billing or cold calling.
With no experience, your application carries the proof. Our page on virtual assistant jobs for beginners decodes the experience line of every post and counts what beginner posts ask for instead; for the document, see our guide to a resume with no work experience.

Pay
How much is a virtual assistant paid in the Philippines?
Posts in our sample paid a median of ₱264 an hour, about ₱45,717 a month at 40 hours a week.
That is the midpoint of the posted range in the 34 posts (68%) that gave a currency and a unit, converted at the BSP reference rate of 23 October 2026. The median hides a split: 9 posts paying in pesos had a median of ₱173 an hour, and 25 posts paying in dollars ₱317. Pay by schedule and niche, and what a freelancer pays in SSS and tax, is in our virtual assistant salary guide; for how the money reaches you, read how freelancers in the Philippines get paid.

Hours
What hours do virtual assistants work?
Expect US business hours, which fall at night in Manila: 20 of 50 posts set them, and 19 gave no schedule at all.
31 posts (62%) were full time and 15 (30%) part time. Few posts said whether you would be an employee or a contractor, so ask before you accept. The night pay rule, at least 10% more for every hour between 10 pm and 6 am, covers employees (Labor Code, Art. 86); a freelance contract pays the rate you agree.
- New York 9 am to 5 pm, until 1 November
- New York 9 am to 5 pm, from 1 November
- Los Angeles 9 am to 5 pm, from 1 November
- Night shift differential, employees
Manila time. Manila is UTC+8 all year; New York is UTC−4 until US clocks change on 1 November 2026 and UTC−5 after; Los Angeles is UTC−8 in winter, per the IANA time zone database (2026). Schedules from 50 posts read 23 October 2026.
Where and scams
Where do you find virtual assistant jobs, and how do you avoid scams?
Start with OnlineJobs.ph, where most posts pay in dollars, and JobStreet, where most posts come from firms that place you with a client business. On either, walk away from anyone who asks you to pay.
On JobStreet, 15 of 20 VA posts (75%) described placing you with a client business, for example in the US, Australia or New Zealand. On OnlineJobs.ph, 21 of the 25 posts that named a currency paid in dollars, and the median pay was higher: ₱317 an hour against ₱216 on JobStreet.
None of the 50 posts asked for a fee, a training payment or bank details. JobStreet itself marked 2 of its 20 posts as not checked by its hirer verification.

- A business hiring for itself2 (10%)
- Not clear from the post3 (15%)

Fit check
Is virtual assistant work right for you?
It suits you if you work well alone, write and speak English clearly, and can keep US hours from a home setup you pay for.
It is a harder fit if you need a team around you or cannot get stable internet at home. A work-from-home call center job gives you a steadier schedule and the company’s training first. Your training plan starts with one of three results:
- Ready to applyYour answers match what VA posts ask for. Train for the screening so your first applications count.
- Ready after some trainingA few of your answers are where applicants get filtered out. Train those first, then apply.
- Train first, then applySeveral answers clash with how the work runs day to day. Train on these, or start with a job that trains you.
