What are the best freelance jobs for beginners?
Start with work where clients judge you on a task you can show, such as virtual assistant (VA) admin, customer support, data entry or social media. These roles ask for organized, careful work more than a degree. The catch: most clients still want some experience, so your first job is to get proof you can do the work.
We read 40 live remote job posts on OnlineJobs.ph on 25 September 2026, 5 each in 8 roles: general VA, customer support, data entry, social media, content writing, graphic design, bookkeeping and video editing. We took the first 5 matching posts per search, in the order shown. Of the 40, 28 (70%) asked for experience, 11 (28%) said nothing about it, and only 1 explicitly said entry-level applicants were welcome: a content writer post paying $3 to $5 an hour.
For a beginner, that 1 in 40 matters. A post that says nothing about experience is not an invitation, and you compete with applicants who have past clients. You improve your odds with samples, a clear profile and a first role that trains you. Customer support, data entry and bookkeeping posts asked for no portfolio at all in our read (0 of 5 each), so they screen on tests and interviews instead.
| Role (5 posts each) | Posts asking for a portfolio or samples |
|---|---|
| Customer support | 0 of 5 |
| Data entry | 0 of 5 |
| Bookkeeping | 0 of 5 |
| General virtual assistant | 1 of 5 |
| Content writing | 3 of 5 |
| Graphic design | 3 of 5 |
| Video editing | 3 of 5 |
| Social media | 4 of 5 |
Each row is 5 posts, so read it as a sign of how the role screens. Roles without portfolio requests still screen you, through tests, trials and interviews. For a beginner without samples, support, data entry and general VA work are the easier places to start.
How much do freelancers earn in the Philippines?
In our read of 40 OnlineJobs.ph posts, the median posted dollar rate was $5.00 an hour (9 posts) and $725 a month for full-time monthly posts (11 posts). These are posted offers, and take-home pay can differ. Most of the posts asked for experience.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Hourly posts, converted to a month (9 posts, all state hours) | $867 a month |
| Hourly and monthly posts pooled (20 posts) | $755 a month |
| Full-time posts paying per month (11 posts) | $725 a month |
Base: n = 40 posts; 20 had a dollar amount with an hourly or monthly period. Median of each range's midpoint. Hourly converted as rate x hours per week x 52 / 12. '$' without a currency code (20 of 37 amounts) is pooled with USD. Source: TrabahoFit read of 40 live OnlineJobs.ph posts, 25 September 2026
Read these numbers with care. Of the 40 posts, 37 (92%) posted some amount, but only 25 (62%) stated the amount, the currency and the period together. Seven amounts had no currency at all, 2 were in pesos and 1 in Canadian dollars, so we left those out. The range is wide: hourly offers ran from $1.50 to $20, and monthly offers from $380 to $1,500. We did not convert dollars to pesos, because the rate you receive depends on the day and on how you withdraw.
For comparison in pesos, Indeed Philippines puts the average employed virtual assistant salary at ₱27,448 a month, from 1,200 salaries over 36 months (Indeed PH, updated 18 September 2026). DOLE's career pamphlet lists ₱18,000 to ₱33,000 a month for VAs, without a date (CareerInfo PH). No figure here is a promise of what you will earn.
What do clients ask for in a freelance job post?
Clients ask for named tools, experience and, in creative roles, samples of your work. Of the 40 posts we read, 31 (78%) named at least one tool, 14 (35%) asked for a portfolio or work samples, and 12 (30%) mentioned a test or a trial before hiring.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Names at least one tool | 31 posts (78%) |
| Experience required or preferred | 28 posts (70%) |
| States a timezone or shift | 18 posts (45%) |
| Portfolio or work samples | 14 posts (35%) |
| Test or trial mentioned | 12 posts (30%) |
| Explicitly accepts entry-level | 1 post (2.5%) |

The tools vary by role. No single tool appeared in more than 5 of the 40 posts, and the posts named 61 different tools in total. The most named were design, video and store tools, followed by team and spreadsheet tools:
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Canva | 5 of 40 |
| Photoshop | 5 of 40 |
| CapCut | 5 of 40 |
| Shopify | 5 of 40 |
| Illustrator | 4 of 40 |
| Loom | 3 of 40 |
| Slack | 3 of 40 |
| Google Sheets | 3 of 40 |

Portfolios cluster in creative work: 13 of the 14 portfolio requests came from social media, writing, design and video posts. Tests are common too, and some are paid. Of the 12 posts that mention a test or trial, 9 are a work sample task or a trial period, and 3 say the test is paid. Many posts also set your hours to the client's clock, like the data entry post below, which asks for 7pm to 3am Philippine time.

How do you start freelancing, step by step?
Pick one service, build 2 or 3 samples, set up one profile, apply daily, and prepare how you will get paid and registered before money arrives. Do these in order, since each step makes the next one easier.
Pick one service you can do today
Choose one role, such as VA admin, customer support or data entry. One clear service is easier for a client to hire than a list of ten.
Learn the tools the posts nameSkills
Read 10 posts for your role and list the tools they name. Free courses help here, such as the ones in our TESDA online courses guide.
Make 2 or 3 work samplesPortfolio
A cleaned-up spreadsheet, three sample support replies, or a week of social posts made in Canva. Put them in one shared folder or a one-page document.
Set up one profile and apply daily
Write a headline that names your service and tools. Answer every question in a post and follow its application instructions exactly.
Take the test or trial seriouslyScreening
Nearly a third of posts in our read mention one. Do it on time and in the format asked. Decline large unpaid tasks that look like finished client work.
Set up payment and your BIR registration
Have a way to receive dollars ready before your first invoice, and register with the BIR on or before you start the business.
Steps 2, 3 and 5 follow what the 40 OnlineJobs.ph posts we read on 25 September 2026 asked for. BIR timing from the BIR Citizen's Charter 2025.
For skills, the guide to free TESDA online courses lists courses you can finish from home. Where to apply depends on your service. OnlineJobs.ph lists long-term roles from clients who hire Filipinos; its pricing page shows employer plans of $69 and $99 a month and says nothing about a fee for workers. Upwork and Fiverr work on projects and have their own fee rules, so read their current terms before you sign up.
How do you become a virtual assistant with no experience?
Show that you can organize work, write clearly and learn a tool fast, then apply to general VA and support roles. DOLE says a degree is not required: "a Sr. High School diploma would suffice" if you have intermediate to advanced technical skills and a professional level of commitment (DOLE CareerInfo PH).
In our read, general VA work was the least demanding on samples: only 1 of the 5 general VA posts asked for a portfolio. Clients looked for tools and reliability instead. A simple way to prove both:
- Learn one tool from each group: a spreadsheet (Google Sheets), a team chat (Slack) and a screen recorder (Loom).
- Record a 2-minute Loom showing how you would sort an inbox or plan a week in a calendar.
- Write three sample replies to a customer: late order, refund, password reset.
- Put your working hours, internet speed and backup plan in your profile, since 18 of 40 posts set a timezone or shift.
Chat and email support is close to VA work and is also hired as employment. The guide to non-voice chat and email jobs shows what those roles test.
How do you get paid by foreign clients?
Most freelancers receive dollars in an online account first, then move the money to a Philippine bank or e-wallet. On a platform, the client pays the platform and you withdraw your balance. With a direct client, you agree on one payment service before you start.
| How you work | How the money moves | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Through a platform (Upwork, Fiverr) | Client pays the platform, you withdraw from your balance to a bank or payment account | The platform's fee and withdrawal options on the day you sign up |
| Direct client (for example from OnlineJobs.ph) | Client sends dollars through PayPal, Payoneer or Wise, you transfer to a bank or GCash or Maya | The transfer fee and the exchange rate at withdrawal |
| Any setup | You issue an invoice for each payment | The BIR invoicing rules below |
Fees change often, so we do not print them here. Compare the amount that arrives in pesos after every fee, and keep a record of each payment, because you need it for your tax returns. Never accept a client's offer to "overpay" and have you send back the difference.
Do freelancers need to register with the BIR?
Yes. The BIR lists "Freelancer" under self-employed individuals in its registration checklist (BIR checklist of documentary requirements, revised July 2025). You can register online through ORUS, and the BIR says self-employed people register "on or before the commencement of business" (BIR Citizen's Charter 2025).
Create an ORUS account
Go to orus.bir.gov.ph and sign up.
Fill in your registration detailsForm 1901
The same details as BIR Form 1901. Item 23 asks whether you choose the 8% income tax rate option.
Upload your ID and a selfie
Any government-issued ID with your name, address and birthdate, such as a PhilID, passport or driver’s license, plus a selfie holding the ID.
Pay ₱30 documentary stamp tax₱30
Online registrants pay ₱30 loose DST. The ₱500 annual registration fee no longer exists.
Print your electronic Certificate of Registration
You can generate and print the eCOR after the online payment.
Set up your invoices
Use BIR Printed Invoices or apply for an Authority to Print invoices.
Source: BIR checklist of documentary requirements (revised July 2025), BIR Form 1901 (January 2024) and the BIR EOPT flyer.
The ₱500 annual registration fee was removed under the Ease of Paying Taxes Act, RA 11976 (BIR EOPT flyer, RA 11976). If you prefer to apply in person, the checklist asks for two originals of BIR Form 1901 at your Revenue District Office (RDO). Your city or municipality may have its own permit rules, so ask your local government unit.
Should you choose the 8% income tax rate?
If your yearly gross receipts stay at or below ₱3,000,000, you can choose to pay 8% on gross receipts above ₱250,000. It replaces the graduated income tax rates and the percentage tax (TRAIN Law, RA 10963, Sec. 24(A)(2)(b) and Sec. 109(BB)). You choose it on BIR Form 1901, item 23.
An illustration with a round number: if you earn ₱600,000 in a year, the 8% applies to ₱350,000 (₱600,000 minus ₱250,000), so the income tax is ₱28,000. The 8% option is simple because you pay on gross receipts without tracking expenses. Graduated rates tax your income after deductions, so they can come out lower if your costs are high. The law sets the rules; your RDO can tell you which one fits your situation.
The 8% option in one view
- Who: self-employed individuals and professionals, including freelancers.
- Limit: gross sales or receipts up to ₱3,000,000 a year.
- Rate: 8% of gross receipts above ₱250,000.
- Replaces: graduated income tax rates and the percentage tax under Section 116.
- Where you choose it: BIR Form 1901, item 23.
How do you spot freelance job scams?
A legitimate client pays you; you never pay a client to get work. Walk away from anyone who asks for a fee, your passwords or your bank login, or who only talks on a chat app and cannot name the business.
Online fraud is growing. The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) received 10,004 cybercrime complaints in 2024, more than three times the 3,317 in 2023, and it counts job scams under online fraud (Philippine News Agency, 31 January 2025).
| Item | Value |

| 2023 | 3,317 |
| 2024 | 10,004 |

Warning signs in a freelance offer
- You must pay for training, a starter kit, software or "registration" before you start.
- The client wants your platform login, bank details or OTP codes.
- You are asked to receive money and forward part of it to someone else.
- A "test" that is a full, unpaid piece of client work. In our read, 3 posts offered a paid test.
- Pay far above the ranges above, for simple tasks, from a client with no business name.
If you are scammed, report it to the government's toll-free hotline 1326. Keep screenshots of every chat and payment.
Should you start freelancing or get a BPO job first?
If you have no experience, an employed BPO or VA-type role is often the faster way to get paid experience, and you can freelance later with that on your profile. Freelancing gives you flexible hours and dollar clients, but most posts want proof you have done the work before.
The two datasets we collected show the gap. Of 50 live call center agent posts on JobStreet on 25 September 2026, 31 (62%) accepted applicants with no experience, openly or with experience only preferred. Of 40 remote OnlineJobs.ph posts read the same day, 1 said so explicitly.
| What you get | Employed BPO agent (50 JobStreet posts) | Remote freelance (40 OnlineJobs.ph posts) |
|---|---|---|
| Open to beginners | 31 of 50 (62%) | 1 of 40 explicitly |
| Posted pay | Median ₱20,000 to ₱25,000 a month (36 posts) | Median $725 a month for full-time monthly posts (11 posts) |
| Health cover | HMO listed in 23 of 50 (46%) | You arrange your own |
| Training and setup | Employer trains you; onsite roles use the office equipment | You supply the computer and internet |
Pay in the two columns is in different currencies, so compare it on the day you decide. The employed route also brings SSS, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG contributions through your employer. The guide to becoming a call center agent explains the hiring steps, and work from home call center jobs covers remote employed roles, a middle path between the two. If call centers are not for you, the career guides for Filipino job seekers compare other paths.
